Ask TFL: How Long Will My 2010 GMC Sierra 5.3L V8 Last?

How long can a truck last? In this case we are talking about a 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 with a 5.3L V8 and a 6-speed automatic. We recently received this question from Dylan F.

I have a 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3 L V8 6-speed automatic transmission standard cab with 106,000 miles with regular oil changes. My question is how long could my truck last before I would have to potentially trade it in?

This question came in via [email protected] We have a Live Q&A show on TFLnow Youtube channel Monday, Thursday, and Friday at 4pm MST. Please join the live show for more discussion on this and other topics.

Dylan's truck has relatively low miles. This question comes down to the remaining value in your truck, especially as you are looking forward to replacing it with a brand new vehicle in the future. Surely, you can get almost any truck to run for several decades and over 250,000 miles with regular maintenance and care. It sounds like Dylan is looking for a new vehicle relatively soon, not 10 years from now.

Used truck value for a 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 regular cab with a 5.3L V8 ranges between $8,200 average trade-in value to $10,100 via private sale (according to KBB and assuming it's a 4×4).

If you were to keep the truck longer, you may run into some major service or repairs. The truck may require another brake job, or engine/transmission upkeep. Naturally, the longer you keep the truck, its value will continue to decrease.

If you are indeed ready for a new vehicle, I would recommend selling or trading-in sooner rather than later. What do you guys think? Please add your comments in the section below.
